An aggressive and beautifully striking Central American "wet pet," this 4.5 to 5-inch Trimac Cichlid (Amphilophus trimaculatus) is a robust specimen. Known for its stunning red-orange eyes and the three distinct dark spots along its body, it is a fast-growing, highly sought-after centerpiece fish for advanced hobbyists.
- Max Size: 12–15" (Males grow larger than females)
- Temperament: Highly aggressive and territorial
- Minimum Tank Size: 75+ gallons for a single specimen; 125+ gallons for adults
- Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)
- pH Range: 7.0–8.0
Often referred to as the "Three Spot Cichlid" or "Tri-Mac," this fish features a beautiful golden-yellow to green iridescent base color highlighted by vibrant red-orange flushes on the face, chest, and finnage. At 4.5 to 5 inches, these fish are rapidly transitioning from their drab juvenile stages into vivid, thick-bodied adults. Mature males will develop impressive, thick nuchal (head) humps and elongated fin extensions.
The Trimac is widely considered one of the more aggressive Central American cichlids and shares the same genus as the Red Devil and Midas cichlids. Because they are highly territorial predators, they are best kept as solitary pets or housed in large setups with other exceptionally robust, tank-busting cichlids. They will eagerly patrol and rearrange their tanks, so any decorations must be sturdy.
Trimac cichlids are enthusiastic omnivores. To promote optimal coloration, health, and growth rate, their diet should include a mix of high-quality cichlid pellets, krill, and frozen meaty foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp.
