Buffalo Head Cichlid (Steatocranus casuarius) – New Arrival!

Discover the fascinating Buffalo Head Cichlid (Steatocranus casuarius), a unique African cichlid native to the rocky, fast-flowing waters of the Congo River basin. This remarkable species stands out for its distinctive head shape, interesting personality, and unusual bottom-dwelling behavior.

Mature males develop a prominent, rounded hump on their forehead, giving this fish its unmistakable buffalo-like appearance. Unlike many other cichlids, the Buffalo Head Cichlid has a reduced swim bladder, allowing it to spend much of its time resting on the bottom and moving in short, characteristic hops among rocks and caves.

Care and Aquarium Requirements

The Buffalo Head Cichlid thrives in a well-maintained aquarium with excellent filtration, good oxygenation, and moderate to strong water movement. Provide plenty of rocks, caves, and crevices to create secure hiding places and establish territories. A sandy substrate is recommended, as this species enjoys digging and rearranging its surroundings.
