Description

Amphilophus is a genus of cichlid fishes from Central America, ranging from southern Mexico to Panama. The genus currently contains 23 species, many of them are well-known among the serious hobbyist.

This group includes species which find their food on or in the bottom. They are sometimes referred to as Central American earth-eaters in analogy to the Geophagus and Satanoperca species of South America.

Invertebrates form an important part of their diet.

The species of this group are not active swimmers but need a lot of space in order to be with other species in the same tank.

A. istlanus, is an impressive fish, also known as the Redside cichlid. It has reached a maximum known size of 169 mm in standard length, about 20 cm in total length.

Males develop massive nuchal humps during breeding season.
